Preserving Heritage - Elephanta Island

Elephanta Island, also known as Gharapuri Island, is a small island located in Mumbai Harbor, off the coast of Mumbai, India. The island is famous for its ancient rock-cut temples, particularly the Elephanta Caves, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva and contain a collection of remarkable sculptures, intricate carvings, and bas-reliefs, many of which date back to the 5th to 7th centuries.

The island faces challenges in waste management, impacting its fragile ecosystem. Our goal is a comprehensive initiative to address the waste management challenges on Elephanta Island, with a focus on sustainable practices, community engagement, and infrastructure development. The primary aim is to establish effective waste management systems to preserve the island's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and environmental integrity.

As a step towards our aim of preserving the heritage of Elephanta Island, we organised a cleanup drive on the occasion of the 75th Republic Day. With the help of 75 + volunteers, we collected a total of 1450 kgs of waste from the island.
